Egg Carton Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore!: Virtual Book Club for Kids
Welcome to January's Virtual Book Club for Kids! This month's author was David McPhail, who was a new author for us. I'm looking forward to seeing all the David McPhail books and activities you link up.
We chose Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore!
and my three year old had me read it three times in a row. It's a silly rhyming story about a man who finds his house full of mischievous pigs. They pour oatmeal in the kitchen sink and have pizzas delivered. The man is so mad about the mess they're making that he tries to kick them out. But the pigs ask to stay so politely that he can't help but give in.

It's virtual book club day when we get to share our Amy Krouse Rosenthal book activities!
Though we read several of her books this month, we chose Spoon
for our activity. Spoon thinks his friends have it so much better than he does. He doesn't get to cut and spread like Knife. He doesn't get to go practically everywhere like Fork, and he's not cool and exotic like Chopsticks. Then he finds out that his friends think Spoon is the lucky one. He gets to be silly and bang on a pot, unlike Knife who is always handled so seriously. Fork wishes he could measure things like Spoon. There's lots of lessons in this humorous book - be happy with what you have, accept yourself and your own unique gifts, the grass is always greener, etc.
This is such a fun book that it's easy to think of extension activities for it, so I came up with a list of 10.

Lots of Spots: Exploring Art Techniques (Virtual Book Club)
We are just going crazy with the Lois Ehlert books here (and I can't wait to see what you've been reading). Our favorite so far has been Lots of Spots
. Ehlert includes a short rhyming poem about a wide variety of striped and spotted animals (I counted 50) with an explanation of animal appearances at the end. Filled with her trademark collages, this book is as fun to look at as it is to read.

Some of my favorite kid bloggers have teamed up to host the Summer Virtual Book Club this summer. Each month we choose a different author, read at least one of his or her books, and do an activity relating to the book. Then we celebrate with a big link party. We hope you'll join us!! Scissor Practice and a Red Ripe Strawberry: July Virtual Book Club
In preparation for the July Summer Virtual Book Club, I checked out lots of Don and Audrey Wood's books from the library, but the one that the kids asked me to read over and over was The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry, and the Big Hungry Bear
. In fact, they had it memorized in the first four days we had it. The narrator follows a little mouse who is going to pick a red, ripe strawberry. The narrator warns the mouse that the big hungry bear loves red ripes strawberries and will come looking for it no matter how the mouse tries to hide, disguise, or guard it. The narrator tells the mouse that the only way to keep himself safe from the bear is to cut the strawberry in half so they can share it.
