When we went to visit my sister for Thanksgiving, my son played for hours with a cardboard castle that my nephew had built.  I promised him that we'd make our own.  And he didn't forget my promise.   I procrastinated for a while because we didn't have enough boxes saved, but when they starting flowing from their corner in the dining room to other parts of the house I knew it was time to quit stalling and just make it.

Welcome to January's Virtual Book Club for Kids! This month's author was David McPhail, who was a new author for us.  I'm looking forward to seeing all the David McPhail books and activities you link up.

We chose Pigs Aplenty, Pigs Galore! and my three year old had me read it three times in a row.  It's a silly rhyming story about a man who finds his house full of mischievous pigs.  They pour oatmeal in the kitchen sink and have pizzas delivered.  The man is so mad about the mess they're making that he tries to kick them out.  But the pigs ask to stay so politely that he can't help but give in.

TP Roll Santa Hats & 5 Santa Books

Secret Message Pumpkins

We read Twelve Haunted Rooms of Halloween, a cute Halloween story told in the style of "The Twelve Days of Christmas".  Believe it or not (which I hardly do), the kids like it because I sing it.  You can also search the illustrations for the 12 trick-or-treaters, 11 spiders spinning, etc., so it's also good counting practice.  Plus there's some bonus things to find throughout the book on the last page.  This is pretty tame for Halloween so it's good for preschoolers who like just a little scare factor.

Bird Feeder from a Milk Jug

Purple Little Bird works hard to make sure everything in her very purple home is perfect, but something is just not right.  She heads off in search of a better place and visits friends like the grey goat (his spot is too windy) and the yellow camel (too dry).  Eventually she comes to three pink possums who lead her to the perfect spot - her purple house!  But now that the purple bird has seen all of the other gorgeous colors there are, she sets out to make her home really perfect by adding them to her previously purple house.

Drew really wanted to make a bird feeder.  We found one made from a milk jug at Wholesale Bird Feeders blog and changed it a little.
