Usually we focus on crafting around the holidays, but my kids love science activities too. Especially fizzy, bubbling ones involving vinegar and baking soda. I made some disappearing lumps of "coal" that dissolved to reveal some Christmas surprises.

Ghost balloons are an easy way to incorporate some science learning into your Halloween preparations. You only need a few simple supplies to create the ghost balloons and they're easy enough for preschoolers to join in the fun.

 

Sink or Float Candy Science

After painting with candy and doing some candy math, we also had to try some candy science. This is a simple sink or float experiment, but the kids loved it because of the candy. It's simple to put together and the only materials required are pen and paper, a selection of candy bars, and a bowl of water. It's a great way to teach children about forming hypotheses and testing their ideas and also a nice way to use up all that Halloween loot.

Ice Volcanoes

If you're looking for a mess-free activity for kids that's quick to set up, ice volcanoes are probably not for you. BUT if you're looking for some fun, messy science that your kids will LOVE, this activity is a good one. All you need for this play recipe is baking soda, water, vinegar, and food coloring. The supplies you need for making ice volcanoes are small bowls, balls that will sink, plastic wrap, and some room in the freezer.

Science for Kids: Ice Experiment

This science experiment is easy to do and requires few materials, all of which you probably already have on hand. It can be done with kids of any age. My preschoolers really enjoyed it, but it's suitable for older kids too.

Make Your Own Slushies: Science for Kids

On a recent trip to Target, I picked up some Slushy Magic cups that were on 70% clearance. The idea is that you freeze the ice cubes provided, add any liquid containing sugar, and put the cap on before giving the whole thing a good shake. They work fine and the kids love them. But it says right on the box that the ice cubes are made from just salt and water. It seemed so simple that I started wondering if you could make your own. I was also a little curious about how it worked.

Flower Race: Preschool Science

My sweet hubby brought me home flowers for no reason. I put them in a vase on the table and the kids could not keep their hands off them. So I gave up, picked out the white ones, and decided to do the classic colored water / flower activity with them.

My sister gave my kids their very own Ladybug Land. It's a little enclosure for ladybugs. You mail in your certificate and the company sends you your very own ladybug larvae to raise to adulthood. My four year old was so excited to get them that we were actually standing at the mailbox waiting when the mailman finally delivered them into his loving arms. (My three year old daughter was less enthusiastic. She was holding out hope that the bug company had included some princesses in the box.)
