Ten on the Sled: Number Recognition and Counting

My kids love the song "Ten in the Bed", so I knew they would like the book Ten on the Sled by Kim Norman.  Ten animals pile on the sled for a wild ride, but one by one they fall off!

This was a great book to use for number recognition and counting.  I made a sled from an egg carton and numbered it using stickers.

For the animals I used ten plastic Easter eggs.  I made a color copy of a few pages in the book and cut out each animal.  I taped the animal to the egg and added a number sticker.

As we read the book and each animal came off the sled, the kids removed one of the animal eggs and counted the ones remaining.  As they counted each animal, they also saw the number on the egg and the egg carton, so not only was it good counting practice, it also worked on number recognition.

This would also be a good prop to use for retelling the story.

  13. Hey Lori. I found that putting the little Pom Pom balls in the eggs is another great game. Especially for adding and subtraction. For instance I put 5 of the Pom Pom balls in the number 5 egg. But for adding and subtraction picking 2 of the eggs.
