Messy Literacy: Dog's Colorful Day

Dog's Colorful Day: A Messy Story About Colors and Counting is one of those books that just begs for an activity to go with it.  Dog is a white dog with a black spot on his ear.  Throughout his messy day more colorful spots are added.  First he has some red jam dropped on him at breakfast, resulting in a red dot.  Next, he gets a splatter of blue paint. This continues until he has 10 spots of 10 different colors.  At the end of the day, he gets a bath.

For this activity, I started by tracing a picture of Dog on white paper and then we just followed along with the book.  Whatever spots Dog got in the book, we put on our own Dog.

If you look closely, you can see where my 4 year old actually licked the chocolate off his paper.

I should have laminated our papers so we could have given Dog a bath at the end, but I didn't think of it in time.

Adventures In Reading with Kids has some great painting, counting, and addition activities for this book and Miss Courtney Meets Bobo has done a cute activity involving treats!

  10. Yum, great ideas. I love the orange juice idea. When do you ever tell your kids it's o.k. to squeeze the juice box? Bobo would love it!
