Saturday Slip-ups! Round 1

This is not the post for you if every kid's project you've ever planned has gone off without a hitch.  Don't read this if you've never found yourself doing 20 minutes of clean up after a mere 5 minutes of playing/creating.  Or if you've never had to admit that the kids' idea was way better and waaaay more fun than your original plan.  Just go ahead and close this tab if you've never, ever, (not even once) "improved" on your child's art work just a little.

Still reading?  Oh good.  You know what I'm talking about.  You plan this beautiful, fun, educational activity and your kids turn their noses up at it.  Or dare to make a finished project that DOESN'T MATCH THE ONE YOU HAD IN YOUR HEAD when you planned this whole stupid thing!

Luckily, it's easy to have a sense of humor about kid's crafts.  For the next three Saturdays, I'll be featuring some failures and flops.  Because it feels good to know that it happens to everybody.  And also because sometimes they are just plain funny.

Check out Jackie's Ugly Duckling (Star-lings) over at Happy Hooligans.  You just have to love a determined (and clever) mom:
Valerie's husband wrote this hilarious post about a scratch-n-sniff rainbow gone awry at Inner Child Fun.
Amy at Teach Mama generously shared not one, but three flops:
Fancy Summer Flip-Flops
 Squid Dogs
Pumpkin Playdough
I can totally relate to this post from Mommy with Selective Memory.  If I try to get something done in another room while Lainey is playing with her rainbow rice, I'll inevitably hear the sound of rice raining down on the floor.  Then the conversation goes like this:  "Are you throwing the rice?"  "No."  "It sounds like you are.  Please don't throw the rice." "Okay.  I won't.", immediately followed by the sound of more rice hitting the floor.
Come back to check out Saturday Slip-ups #2 & #3 for the next two weeks! (There are so many great posts about not-so-great activities that I couldn't fit them all into one round up!)  And if you have your own "flop", please share it in the comments!

  1. Great series! We had a big flop with something I thought the boys would love. Boy was I wrong!

  2. These are great! We had a major science flop trying to make elephant toothpaste. We were all so

  3. OMGosh! This post is hilarious. Now I wish I'd kept the recent activity (um ... I mean flop) I did with my son. We tried to build a Roman arch with jumbo marshmallows. Sounds cool, right?! Um, except that even with peanut butter as mortar, it wouldn't hold together enough for us to get the "keystone" in. My son still learned something but it was a giant mess with peanut butter everywhere. Good thing the marshmallows tasted delicious!

  4. We kind of had a flop when my mommy friend came over and our kids squeezed their own orange... Problem was, I used naval oranges instead of juicing oranges (Valencia oranges)! Will never do that again!

  5. I just found your blog through the One Lovely Blog Award post at Criss-Cross Applesauce. I'm your newest follower!

    Lil' Country Kindergarten

  6. That last one reminded me of the one and only time we did a sensory bin. I then spent 2 hours cleaning up said bin they'd gotten into.

  7. Wa ha!! That is too funny! Thanks for linking up at the STinky Linky Party!

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment!
