Today it was so nice that we took this activity outside. I set out bowls with dried pasta, sugar, and cereal along with some spoons, whisks, and measuring cups.
They had a great time mixing, dumping, and stirring. We even added "pepper" (glitter).
To assuage my guilt about "wasting" food, we put the leftover mixture in an old ice cream bucket so we can reuse it again and again. (That pasta has been around for months already.) Also, our dog did an excellent job of making sure even the stuff that fell on the ground didn't go to waste. He really liked this activity too.
The perfect book to read when you're playing with food is the classic Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs

ReplyDeleteI make sensory bins for upper grade students but have never thought of making them with pasta. Very creative! I also try to think "out the box" as an educator. My recent posts include 3D worksheets and math centers that can be made from empty CD cases.

I just cleaned out the pantry yesterday and left out some rice and pasta "scraps" that I plan to make into a sensory bin! I remember when my oldest was about a year old and I gave her a box of spaghetti while I was cooking... it ended up being her favorite toy for a LONG time!
ReplyDeleteThe movie "Cloudy with a Chance..." is cute. It's very different from the book (I had a hard time imagining how they would turn it into a movie...) It's much more futuristic-
outside is a GREAT idea! My kids always helped me in the kitchen..by the time they all (8!) went to kindergarden they could read recipies and do measurments! cooking is a wonderful learning tool!

What a super fantastic idea!!! Would you please share this with our readers for Fun Stuff Fridays? http://www.toysinthedryer.com/2012/01/fun-stuff-fridays-6.html
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I do something similar with my eldest daughter, using whatever I have on hand... when we only have a tiny amount of leftovers that would otherwise go to waste, chickpeas, jelly...I'll have to try this one outside, I'm sure she'll love it!
ReplyDeleteI'm also your newest follower, feel free to check out my blog and follow me back if you like. Thanks!!

This is so clever! Would be fun thing to do during outdoor time at the prescool I teach at!
ReplyDeleteYay for learning about food and I love that you did it outside even in the cold. All bundled up with the gloves on. I bet that was fun for them! Thanks for linking up to Thinky Linky Thurdsay!

What fun & I love that you bundled up & took it outside!! We LOVE CLoudy with a Chance of Meatballs!!! Super cute book! The movie is cute, fun & clean. Not exactly like the book, there is a love story & a selfish mayor who ends up quite large.... but it was cute & clean.
ReplyDeleteThanks for linking up to TGIF! See you next week,
Beth =-)
Fun!! Thanks for sharing at Shine on Fridays!
ReplyDeleteMy daughter would love this activity... the mixing, and the dumping and the stirring :) Love the book as well. Thanks so much for sharing this on Sharing Saturday Lorie, hope you have a great week.

This is a fun activity to go with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs book. We own this book and enjoy it too. Thanks for joining WMCIR!
ReplyDeleteI use the "last little bit" of things that will never get used otherwise or the bag that sits in the pantry for two years (LOL!) for sensory tubs. I've colored rice and used beans and popcorn kernels...the scooping, pouring, spooning, and transferring is just so much fun for little ones!
ReplyDeleteI love that you took them outside for fresh air!!
love this post... I usually throw all the left over odds and ends of pasta into a pot and serve it for a super-surprise-dinner... I suspect the kids might enjoy sensory play more than mums hodge-podge cooking!
ReplyDeleteLove when we can take was is normally indoor play into our outdoor play spaces! Looks like they are really having a great time.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for linking up to the outdoor play party! I am sharing and pinning this post. Hope you will link up with us again!
Thank you for saving my dinner. I saw this on Greening Sam and Avery's FB page and when my boys were on the verge of melting down while I was trying to make dinner I thought of this post. I poured some old pasta in our water table, gave them some small containers, spoons, and let them enjoy. It worked like a charm :)
ReplyDeleteSo fun! My 2 year old would love doing this. Thanks for the inspiration. And thanks for sharing at Monday Madness. Hope to see you again tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteLooks like they are having so much fun. It's one of the great way to have a good time with your children.
