Word Family Turkeys

There are a couple of ways you could do this activity. You could print the turkey template here and write a word family base on the body (like -ap) and have your child fill in each feather with the beginning (like cl, c, m etc.)

OR you could do what I did and make a few turkeys with detached feathers. I wrote the word family base on the body of the turkey and a beginning on each feather. Then give your child the turkey bodies and have them add the feathers.

If you don't know where to start with word families -at, -an, and -ap are good ones because they have the short a sound. Those are the three I did:
-at  (h,c,s,r,b,th)
-an  (c,r,t,v,f,m)
-ap  (c,m,n,cl,sn,wr)
There are some repeats on the feathers so tell them if they've already put a "c" (for example) on the -at body, they need to find another place to put it.  If they've done it correctly, I wouldn't worry if they end up with 4 feathers on one turkey, and 8 on another.  If you think they're ready you could turn it into a puzzle and challenge them to make it work with exactly six feathers on each turkey.  You could also substitute more advanced word families.  Enchanted Learning has a great list.  To modify it for younger kids, you could do rhyming words or same beginning sound words or even matching colors or letters.  Hope you have fun with it!

  15. This is a great activity for my kindergarten son. I did something with a paper plate really fast and asked him to play a game with me. He was excited and then after he did all the words he said, "is that it" I think decorating a turkey with colors for him would make it all much more fun. I will do this will a blank turkey so he can color it in. Thanks for sharing on Monday Madness. I love your blog!
