Moo Maker Failure & Success!

I had big plans.  Well, I always have big plans.  In my own head my crafts, decorating, and kids' activities put Martha Steward to shame.  Unfortunately, I find reality to be extremely uncooperative.  Anyway, we got The Cow That Went OINK from the library.  Like the name suggests, it's about a cow that oinks. All the other farm animals make fun of him.  Then he meets a pig who moos.  They become friends and teach each other to make a new sound.  The kids and I had fun making the noises of them learning their new sounds. "Mooonk", "Moink!"

To go with this book, I was going to make these noisemakers from Family Fun
An origami book I have said they make a mooing noise.  Well, I did make them.  We couldn't get them to work.  I blew into that stupid paper tube until I felt like I was going to pass out.  Then I went online and found the Family Fun article and read the reader's comments for tips.  Somebody said you actually need to suck in rather than blow out.  And still we could. not. get. these. things. to. moo.  Or to make any noise whatsoever.  Soooooo, here was my plan B:  Paper towel rolls wrapped in cow paper.  And the kids love them and it sure does sound like we have a couple of little noisy cows running around here!

  8. Haha, I love your description of what it's like in your head. I am exactly like that! The cow paper towel rolls look like fun. Something about a paper towel roll, just begs, "make noise!":)

  9. I also have grand plans frequently come crashing down. I posted about one of our fails this week too! I love your ingenuity and that they still had fun! I love when kids reinforce the fact that they are typically happy with even simple things that are made special by people that love them :) Love your post!
