When I was thinking about something to go with this book, chestnuts obviously sprang to mind. To be honest, I've never eaten a chestnut. My only chestnut experience is singing about them roasting on an open fire. Do they sell them in the grocery store? How do you make them? Then I thought about a chestnut craft. I'm sure a Google search would turn up tons of cute ideas. BUT while my kids like art projects (especially the messy ones), what they REALLY love are treats. So I finally decided on some Thanksgiving cupcakes that the kids could help decorate. I was inspired by the July Woman's Day cover that featured corn on the cob cupcakes made from white and yellow jelly beans. Instead of searching high and low for the right color jelly beans for the corn, I just grabbed a bag of fall colored M&Ms and we went to town.
She had to sample some before she started.
I added some yellow tissue paper for husks. These were decorated by me. The little ones ate their creations right away.Linking to The Girl Creative, Sew Can Do, Homemaker on a Dime, The DIY Home Sweet Home Project, Creative Me Monday, Savvy HomeMade Monday, The Gunny Sack, Skip to my Lou, The Artsy Girl Connection, One Tough Mom, Today's Creative Blog, Nap Time Creations, Type A, Crayon Freckles, Reasons to Skip the Housework, Remodelaholic, Mom on Timeout, A Creative Princess, Muffin Monday, Between U & Me, Happy Hour Projects, Designer Garden, Someday Crafts Thanksgiving, Ladybird Ln, Bacon Time, Scraps of Life, The Crafty Nest, Family Ever After, Tatertots & Jello, Simply Sweet Home, Junk in their Trunk, A Well-Seasoned Life, Read Explore Learn

American Chestnut trees were wiped out in a blight maybe a hundred years ago or so. The US imports chestnuts from Europe and demand is much higher than supply. You can buy them at the supermarket.

ReplyDeleteHi visiting from one tough mom. Love your cupcakes. They are so cute. I think I may have to let the grandies do these after our feast. I saw chestnuts in Ohio when visiting my cousins. I think the corn is much cuter!
ReplyDeleteThat's a really cute idea. It's amazing how busy we get to do things "for" our kids, and we never do stuff "with" them.
