Candy Corn Crescents

Today we read Julius's Candy Corn.  Julius is instructed not to eat the candy corn on the cupcakes before the Halloween party.  Instead, Julius "counts" them (by eating them!)  This is a great book for preschoolers.  Kevin Henkes is also the author of Julius, the Baby of the World, Chrysanthemum, and Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse.  We love his books.

I wanted to come up with an activity to go with the story that didn't involve actual candy corn because Lainey is not that good with small, hard, chewy foods yet and also, well, I don't like it. :)

Instead we made candy corn crescents.  We had a lot of fun making them.    I put some sugar in three bowls (I put in way too much.  You don't need this much. It will only wind up all over your kitchen floor.  Trust me.)  Drew added one drop of yellow food coloring to one bowl, one drop of red and one drop of yellow to another, and we left the third bowl white.

The food coloring will clump up a little at first but don't worry.  Just keep mixing it.

Unroll your crescent roll dough and spread with softened butter.  Sprinkle the colored sugar on top to make them resemble candy corn.  I just put the dough on big cookie sheets and let the kids go.  I wouldn't say their final products looked like candy corn, but they had a lot of fun making them and they tasted good.  I made one so you could see what the idea was.

I baked them for about 5 minutes at 375 degrees.  When they came out of the oven, we sprinkled them with some cinnamon.  They were delicious!
