Book Scavenger Hunt Using Paint Chips

I saw this paint chip activity that I loved.  You collect paint chips, put them on a ring, and punch a hole in each color so your kids can use them to find things outside that match each color.

I started thinking about how I could put my own twist on this activity because we usually don't have a problem coming up with outside activities. (My favorite is when Drew runs back and forth in the yard, wearing himself out, while my only job is to announce he's won the Piston Cup.)

As a way to incorporate books into the activity, I decided to set up a book color scavenger hunt.

I set out a big pile of books...
which was totally unnecessary.  They picked one of their favorites, What Color Is Your Underwear?, and ignored the other books.  We found every color in that single book, so emptying your bookshelf onto the floor is entirely optional.  You could just pick one or two books and go from there.  (That way it's also portable.  You could do this in the car or the waiting room.)

  2. What a great way to get the most out of the pictures in picture books! This would be a great way to get a child interested in looking at books that normally isn't interested at all!
    Great post!!
